Though winter didn’t amount to much, and it feels like spring has been going on for quite some time now, there was something missing.
To me, the arrival of spring means one thing, lacrosse. I played lacrosse for 10 years, was the assistant coach for a few youth teams, and am currently a referee. If you’re in the area staying the night to avoid the long drive home after a game, I would be glad to give you directions to any of the fields around. If you weren’t originally staying for lacrosse, but would like to see a game, I know where to find the schedules and locations of all CYC Youth Lacrosse games, and could most likely get the schedule for high school games in the area as well.

So if you’re a lacrosse fan or you would like to find out more about the sport, talk to me at the front desk about it. I would be glad to discuss strategies, rules, and the ever-elusive ground ball drill. If you are a coach, and know a ground ball drill that effectively simulates an in-game situation, I would be glad to hear about it. It seems like everything I’ve tried ends up being based on a player’s overall speed, and cannot accurately depict a game situation. Anyway, if you like lacrosse, talk to me and I’ll set you up with what you need to fill that gap that has been missing all winter.

Spring seems to be here to stay, and for those itching to enjoy the outdoors in the Berkshires, I have another recommendation for a good days hike. Monument Mountain is a short ride down route 7 from The Yankee Inn, and has some of the best views in the Berkshires. There are several trails to get to the top of the mountain that vary in difficulty, but no matter which way you choose to go, getting to the top is a great accomplishment. The view of the Housatonic river valley is spectacular, and those who make it to the top will enjoy views as far as Mt. Greylock (the highest peak in MA), Southern Vermont, and the Catskill Mountains in New York. Monument Mountain is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, drawing more than 20,000 visitors a year according to the Trustees of Reservations.
Now that it’s warmer outside, dust off those hiking boots, choose your trail, and head up to the summit. Be sure to bring your camera and you may be able to snap a photo of a bald eagle! For more information about hiking at Monument Mountain take a look at the Trustees of Reservations web site http://www.thetrustees.org/places-to-visit/berkshires/monument-mountain.html Happy Hiking!

March has a very good reputation. It’s the beginning of spring; Basketball’s March Madness attracts sports fans from all over, but on April 2nd, the college basketball season is over. However, winter sports fans don’t have to pack it all away, there’s still one more sport to watch. That’s right ladies and gentlemen, the NCAA Frozen Four, Ice hockey’s championship bracket. The four teams have already been decided, and it looks to be a promising few games. Union College is making their first appearance in the Frozen Four, after beating out Umass Lowell. They will play Ferris State University in the semi-finals and the winner of that game will go on to face the winner of the Boston College, Minnesota game. Boston College has won the tournament 4 times, and is looking to catch their rival Boston University’s 5 championship wins. The games are being held in Tampa Florida this year, with the Semifinal games on April 5th and the Championship on the 7th.

If you’re at the Yankee on those nights, which I usually work the nights, head down to the lounge and help me cheer against BC or for Union on the 5th, and on the 7th, depending on who makes the championship game. And if by some chance you are a BC fan, I can’t see why anyone would be, then I will enjoy a good rivalry.
