February Vacation Housekeeping Fun Time Adventures

 Mick Huskahousekeeping

If anyone who’s reading this is an avid baseball fan, then you know what the definition of a utility player is.  For those that aren’t fans of the game, allow me to give you a quick definition.  A utility player is one who can play any position on the field.  Some games you’ll see them in the outfield, other times they’ll be playing an infield position and even in a pinch they can pitch and catch.  This is how I view my position at The Yankee Inn.  I work front desk three days per week and the other two I work as housekeeping supervisor.  I’m kind of an all purpose employee.

However, during February vacation I picked up a few extra housekeeping shifts.  We were short a housekeeper and there’s no way I was going to leave the staff short-handed and overworked.  So I kissed my days off goodbye and used them to work housekeeping.  Getting in there and cleaning rooms instead of just washing/folding laundry and doing room checks is certainly an eye opening experience.

I considered myself pretty seasoned in high stress work environments considering that all my previous jobs had been kitchen positions.  Even that couldn’t prepare me for February vacation.  Housekeeping some of the toughest work I’ve ever performed.  When the day is over, your body just aches from head to toe.  Your hands are dried out and cracked from the cleaning products and (believe it or not) from folding laundry.  I’m amazed to think that our housekeeping staff (including our manager) do this five days and forty hours per week.  Not to mention, I was able to witness the state in which some rooms are left upon check out.  Some of them are not a pretty sight.

So the moral to this story is to appreciate your housekeeping staff.  Not just here at the Yankee Inn, but at any hotel.  Try to remember to tip them for all their hard work as well.  It’s a tough job and it takes a special person to consistently perform at a high level.  Fortunately we at the Yankee Inn have been blessed with a wonderful, hard working housekeeping staff.  If you’re staying with us and you see one of our wonderful housekeepers, thank them.  It’s not something that’s heard often, but a big thank you is something they deserve.
