The Colonial Theatre

Mick Huska
As I’ve written before The Berkshires are home to some great music and theater. During the summer, it’s far and away the biggest reason people plan their vacation to the Berkshires. But what if you’re planning a vacation to The Berkshires for different reasons? What if your vacation centers around hiking and canoeing during the day and you’re really not a fan of classical music? Well, you can certainly find something here.
The Colonial Theater in Pittsfield is slowly and quietly becoming one of Western Massachusetts’ most intimate concertvenues. Year after year their reputation as a great venue seems to build and they attract bigger names. In recent years (aside from James Taylor) we’ve seen names such as Bela Fleck, Rusted Root, Los Lonely Boys and Natalie Merchant grace the stage of The Colonial. We’ve even seen comedians such as Blue Collar Comedy Tour’s Ron White and The Daily Show’s John Oliver perform stand up sets.
This spring and summer seems to have the strongest artist list yet. In April, Bob Weir from The Grateful Dead will be performing a solo acoustic set at The Colonial. To keep up with The Grateful Dead theme, Dark Star Orchestra will bring their talents to Pittsfield in May. DSO is the premier Grateful Dead tribute band, performing note for note renditions of Grateful Dead concerts (yes, concerts). A perfect evening for The Deadhead in your life! Also in May, Colin Hay from the hit 80s band Men At Work will be performing. June sees the Chris Robinson Brotherhood pull into town to treat TheBerkshires to some fine psychedelic rock n roll. In August comedian Bill Engvall also from the Blue Collar Comedy Tour will be making many Berkshire County residents and tourists laugh.
As you can see, The Berkshires isn’t just about classical music. So if classical music isn’t your cup of tea, then don’t fret because we have plenty of music here that you will enjoy. If you’re not seeing anything in Berkshire County that interests you check out the listings from Iron Horse Entertainment in Northampton. A quick 45 minutes ride from The Berkshires, IHEG gives you five concert venues from which to choose. As always, when you’re staying with us at The Yankee Inn, stop at the front desk and find out what’s playing. Our staff will be happy to help you find the perfect show for the evening.
