Art, Science & History in PittsfieldBerkshire Museum
The Berkshire Museum is a rare mash-up of art, natural science, and history under one roof in downtown Pittsfield, about a 10-minute drive from The Yankee Inn. Fresh off a major renovation, the museum reopened in July 2026 with refreshed galleries and a new state-of-the-art aquarium.
It’s also one of the most reliable rainy-day picks in the region, with enough variety that different ages can wander in different directions and all come away happy. It’s centrally located, too, so it’s an easy pivot if a hike or garden day gets rained out.

About the Berkshire Museum
Founded in 1903 by paper magnate Zenas Crane, the Berkshire Museum was built on an unusual idea: to bring the best of a natural history museum, a science museum, and an art museum together in one place for the people of Western Massachusetts, inspired by institutions like the Smithsonian and the Met.
More than a century later, that mix still defines it. The collections range from fine art and sculpture to historical artifacts, minerals, and natural science specimens, now presented alongside refreshed galleries and interactive experiences for visitors of all ages.
What to see
The Feigenbaum Aquarium is a longtime favorite that’s gotten a major upgrade. Now located on the first floor and nearly twice the size of the original, the new aquarium features dozens of aquatic and terrestrial species, including a Caribbean reef octopus, bamboo shark, moon jellyfish, reptiles, and amphibians.
Beyond the aquarium, visitors can explore the Paleontology and Geology Gallery, Immersed in Nature, Cabinets of Curiosities, and the Hall of History. These exhibits showcase everything from fossils and minerals to historical objects and natural science specimens, offering plenty to discover throughout the museum.
There’s a strong art collection, too, spanning American and European painting and sculpture, along with rotating special exhibitions that bring something new to each visit. Between the aquarium, galleries, and interactive exhibits, it’s easy to spend a couple of hours exploring.
A refreshed museum
The Berkshire Museum reopened in July 2026 following a major renovation of its galleries and visitor spaces. Alongside the expanded aquarium, improvements include refreshed exhibition galleries, a new family activity center, and updated spaces that bring the museum’s art, history, and natural science collections together in new ways.
Best for families and rainy days
The Berkshire Museum is a great option when the weather turns or when you’re traveling with kids who need a change of pace. The aquarium and interactive exhibits give younger visitors plenty to explore, while the art, history, and natural science galleries offer something for adults, making it an easy outing for families with children of different ages.

The museum also offers accessible facilities and a variety of admission discounts. For the most current information on admission prices, hours, accessibility, and special exhibitions, visit the official Berkshire Museum website before your trip.
Plan to spend approximately two hours exploring the aquarium and galleries, although families with younger children may want to allow additional time for interactive exhibits.
History and the Little Cinema
The museum’s founder, Zenas Crane, came from the papermaking family whose mills still operate in the region, and his vision of a broad, welcoming museum for a small city has proven remarkably durable. Part of that legacy is the Little Cinema, a beloved arthouse film program that screens independent and international films on select days, effectively giving Pittsfield a year-round art house inside the museum.
Between rotating exhibitions, the permanent collections, family programming, and film nights, the Berkshire Museum works as a genuine community hub rather than a one-time stop. That’s worth keeping in mind if you’re staying in the area for several days and want a reliable indoor option that isn’t the same on every visit. It’s a rare small-city museum that genuinely rewards a repeat visit.
Pair it with
The museum sits in the heart of downtown Pittsfield, so it’s easy to build a day around it with lunch in town and a visit to Hancock Shaker Village just outside the city. If you’re catching a show, the Colonial Theatre and Barrington Stage Company are both nearby, which makes the museum a natural afternoon stop before an evening out.
