Bousquet Mountain
Bousquet Mountain is one of the oldest ski areas in the country and the closest ski hill to Lenox, about a five minute drive from The Yankee Inn. It's a friendly, local mountain built for a straightforward day of skiing, snowboarding, or snow tubing, which makes it a great pick for families, beginners, and anyone who wants time on the snow without a long drive.
Recently renovated under new ownership, it blends a genuine slice of Berkshire ski history with a fresh base lodge and restaurant, so it feels both familiar and up to date. It's the kind of place you can ski for a couple of hours after work or spend a full family day, without a big-resort price tag.

About Bousquet Mountain
Bousquet opened in 1932 and is the oldest existing ski area in the Berkshires. The property started as a mink farm before it became a ski hill during the Great Depression, when owner Clarence Bousquet let the local ski club cut a slope on his land. It earned a real place in the sport's history: it was one of the first areas anywhere to offer night skiing, lighting its slopes in 1936 with help from General Electric, and Bousquet even invented and patented an early rope-tow gripper that he went on to sell by the hundreds of thousands. By the late 1930s, with several rope tows running, it was described as one of the most mechanized ski centers in the East, and over the years it hosted notable visitors and produced several Olympic skiers.
Since 2020 it has been owned by Mill Town Capital, which has invested in the base area and added Drifters Bar & Restaurant, giving the old mountain a warm, community feel while keeping ticket prices friendlier than the big resorts. It now shares a multi-mountain season pass with Berkshire East and Catamount, which adds value if you plan to ski more than once.
Skiing, snowboarding, and tubing
Bousquet spans roughly 200 acres with a 750-foot vertical drop, a couple dozen trails, chairlifts and magic carpets, and terrain parks, with snowmaking covering most of the mountain. There's a gentle learning area with magic carpets at the bottom and steeper black-diamond terrain up top, so a first-timer and a confident skier can share the same afternoon, and night skiing lets you keep going after dark.
The separate snow-tubing hill, with its own lift and multiple lanes, is a favorite with families who want the fun without lessons or gear. A ski school and a well-regarded race program round out the winter offerings, and the season generally runs November through April.
Beyond winter
Bousquet isn't only a cold-weather spot. In the warmer months the mountain hosts events and concerts, runs a disc golf course, and serves as a trailhead for hiking with views over Pittsfield and the surrounding hills. Warm-weather offerings shift from year to year, so it's worth checking the site to see what's running when you plan to visit.
Getting there and best time to visit
Bousquet is on Dan Fox Drive just outside downtown Pittsfield, with a large parking lot and, in peak winter periods, a shuttle from the nearby Pittsfield Country Club. For skiing and tubing, December through March offers the most reliable snow. Because it's a local mountain, weekday afternoons and evenings tend to be calmer than Saturdays, when after-school and family crowds arrive. And because Bousquet shares a Summit pass with Berkshire East and Catamount, a season pass here stretches to two other New England mountains, which is worth weighing if you expect to ski more than a handful of times; day tickets, meanwhile, tend to run friendlier than the larger resorts.
Where to stay near Bousquet Mountain
Because Bousquet is only about five minutes from The Yankee Inn, it's one of the easiest ski days you can have in the Berkshires without staying on a mountain. We're a family-owned inn in Lenox with indoor and outdoor pools, complimentary breakfast before an early start, fireplace rooms to warm up in, and the Foxtrail Lounge for an après drink, and staying in town keeps you close to restaurants and everything else the area offers.
The base lodge and getting set up
After a few runs, the renovated base lodge is a comfortable place to regroup, with Drifters Bar & Restaurant serving food and drinks and plenty of room to warm up. The mountain keeps staff on site seven days a week for season-pass sales, rental returns, and ski and snowboard tuning, so it's easy to sort out gear even outside peak hours.
Because Bousquet is a community mountain rather than a sprawling resort, the atmosphere stays relaxed and friendly, which is a big part of why local families have kept coming back for generations. It makes for a low-stress day, especially with young kids who need frequent breaks, snacks, and a warm place to regroup between runs.
Pair it with
Bousquet sits right by Pittsfield, so it slots neatly into a fuller day. The Berkshire Museum, with its aquarium and mix of art and natural science, is a short drive away and makes a good rainy-afternoon backup, and Hancock Shaker Village is close by for families who want a bit of history alongside their time on the snow.
